If you may have been exposed to HIV, time matters
HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) must be started within 72 hours.
PEP is a short course of medicine that can prevent HIV infection after a possible exposure — but only if it is started within 72 hours, and it works better the sooner it is started. Hours matter here, not days.

Go to your nearest clinic or hospital casualty (emergency) department and ask for PEP. PEP is available at public clinics and casualty units across South Africa, and you do not need an appointment to ask for it.
This applies after a condom breaks, after sex without a condom when you do not know the other person’s status, after a needle-stick or occupational injury, and after sexual assault. If you have been assaulted, go straight to your nearest hospital casualty department or a Thuthuzela Care Centre — they provide PEP, emergency contraception and support in one place.
Sexual health is health. Nobody on the iScript Health team will ask you to justify your life, count your partners, or explain yourself. You will be asked clinical questions, given clinical answers, and treated like any other patient — because that is what you are.

Most people who delay sexual health care are not avoiding the doctor. They are avoiding the queue, the front desk, the person from church two chairs down, and the question they do not want to answer in a room with other people in it.

Every test has a window period — a stretch of time straight after exposure when an infection may not yet show up. Fourth-generation laboratory HIV tests detect most infections from roughly two to six weeks after exposure, so a test taken very soon after a possible exposure may need to be repeated. No HIV or STI test is 100% accurate, and your doctor will tell you when to test and when to re-test for your specific situation.
Prevention works. Treatment works.
And a diagnosis is not the end of anything.
U = U
A person living with HIV who is on effective treatment and has a sustained undetectable viral load does not pass HIV on to sexual partners. This is the finding of the PARTNER and PARTNER2 studies.
PrEP, taken as prescribed
When taken as prescribed, oral PrEP reduces the risk of acquiring HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It requires a negative HIV test to start and ongoing monitoring.
PEP, started fast
PEP is given after a possible exposure and must begin within 72 hours. The earlier it starts, the better. It is a 28-day course, and your doctor will explain the follow-up testing that goes with it.
South Africa runs the largest HIV treatment programme in the world, with an estimated 7.8 million people living with HIV (UNAIDS South Africa country factsheet, 2023 estimates). Testing and treatment here are routine, ordinary healthcare.
